Lesson 1: Introducing the Insects

Welcome to Backyard Bugs!

In this first lesson, we’ll talk about the big world of insects. You’ll also learn just how many different insects are out there. And listen carefully to find out about the first insect that was launched into space!

Go on a Nature Walk!

This week we challenge you to spend some time outside. Go on a nature walk. Look for things you think might be insects!

Make several copies of the observation page so you can take notes on several bugs while you’re out. If you don’t have a printer, no problem. Just use regular drawing paper. Be sure to bring your paper plus some pencils or colored pencils.

Look under rocks, in flower beds, in shaded areas—anywhere a bug might hide—and draw the creatures you find.

Consider this question as you’re observing the bugs: What parts do you see on all insects?
