Physical Science Explored

The physical science curriculum that gives middle and high school students a high-quality science education and an engaging, hands-on experience — right at home.

You might have considered sending your kids to a “real” classroom to give them a real science education…

But what they’re more likely to get is a dose of Mr. Twelve-minutes-til-retirement, droning for an hour right out of the textbook.

…While the rest of the class texts each other under their lab benches.

And maybe two bland activities with used-up, worn-out supplies that don’t even work.

Not real inspiring.

You can give your student an integrated chemistry & physics education at home – even in middle and high school.

Your child can continue to build the foundation they need to continue to thrive in science throughout high school and beyond, right at home.

They can master important science vocabulary and concepts they’ll need for more advanced courses like chemistry and physics.

And walk away from every lesson and hands-on lab activity inspired by the wonder of God’s amazing creation.

Best of all YOU don’t have to know your colloids from your suspensions to do it.

Introducing

Engaging, hands-on science…that practically teaches itself!

Inside Physical Science Explored You’ll Find…

 ENGAGING VIDEO LESSONS

You make sure your student logs into their online classroom, and we’ll take care of the rest! There’s an engaging video lesson available for each of the 35 weeks of the course, but students are free to move through the program at their own pace.

GRADED-FOR-YOU QUIZZES & EXAMS

Physical Science Explored students take weekly comprehension quizzes, plus quarterly exams. Every question is graded for you, so you don’t have to brush up on your nuclear decay and half-life calculations to know for sure that your kiddo is on track.

HANDS-ON LABS & ACTIVITIES

Each week, your student gets to engage in a new hands-on activity that brings their weekly lessons to life. Lab videos guide them to set up any tricky activities (so you don’t have to)!

READING ASSIGNMENTS

Students receive weekly reading assigned from our recommended textbook. It’s totally optional, but we do encourage you to grab the textbook (or an alternative of your choice).

Optional high school track:
Physical Science Explored PLUS (Level C)!

When students sign up for Physical Science Explored PLUS, they can earn high school credit. Students will receive access to everything included in Level B, along with exclusive access to additional weekly assignments in the Level C track of Physical Science.

In Level C, student’s will deepen their understanding of physics and chemistry through extra training videos. They’ll be challenged with research assignments that will help them understand some of the fundamental laws that govern nature and learn about important scientists in history. Students will memorize key terms and principles, as well as study how these principles have impacted world history. And they will be instructed on writing lab reports and have the opportunity to practice with a number of exclusive Level C labs.

This is just a taste of what your high school students will have the opportunity to explore in Physical Science!

As homeschoolers, it can be difficult to find a curriculum that not only challenges, but engages our children.

It’s usually one or the other: too easy, too boring, or too hard. Luke and Trisha have been inspired by God to create a curriculum that balances all of that. I love the depth of knowledge they are gaining from the information. They know more than I do now and I’ve been through college geology and earth science! Never before has there been a curriculum that is so versatile in the choice for parents to be hands-off or fully engaged.

During busy weeks, I can ask the children to “go do science”. They can do it on their own and I can fully trust Luke and Trisha to present the information in the method, and belief system, in which I would present it to them myself. On less busy weeks, I can sit and watch the videos with them, gaining a greater knowledge.

This program literally fell into our laps after searching and toiling over which science curriculum to choose for our boys…

I have a Biology degree so I knew I wanted a meaty and informational science curriculum for my children, but not one so cumbersome it weighed us down. I wanted something full and thorough, yet not so rigorous it didn’t offer us time to explore the real world of science happening all around us. I wanted something that allowed my kids to be hands-on, because science is about learning through exploration. But I don’t love a huge mess, so experiments had to make sense, be planned, and not cause a giant hiccup in the rest of our school day.

I tried curriculum after curriculum that seemed as if it should check these boxes, but we kept falling on our faces. Some were so rigorous it was stressful. Some were just boring. Some were so clunky with parts and pieces and no logical layout. I thought I had hit the end of the line, exhausting all options when I happened upon Journey. Thank you for your efforts and helping to check all the boxes for us.

I needed a more in-depth science course for my very science-minded daughter that she could do mostly on her own.

The content has been very accurate and the right depth for middle school. The quizzes and tests have required studying but aren’t overly challenging, so my daughter doesn’t feel discouraged. I love that your program not only teaches science, but teaches note-taking and study skills as well. My daughter has gained a lot of confidence in her ability to study and take tests this year!

Inquiring Homeschool Mama Minds Want to Know…

What is covered in the course?

Check out the Physical Science Explored Scope & Sequence here for an overview of the topics we’ll cover in this course.

What’s included with my purchase? What additional books or supplies will I need for this course?

You’ll get access to all lesson and lab videos along with PDF downloads of the student guidebook, lab guide, curriculum guide, and answer keys.

Please note, this is the first year of the course and the guidebook and lab guide are still in production, so physical copies are not yet available to purchase.

We also highly recommend that you purchase the textbook: Novare Physical Science

You’ll also be responsible for purchasing lab supplies for any labs you’d like your student to complete. You can review the Physical Science Lab & Activity Supplies List here

When does the course begin?

Your student will have the opportunity to be a part of our first year of this course! The course is currently in development and will be ready for your learner to begin by August 1, 2024.

Your student can start on August 1, 2024 or you can wait to push the start button until later.

How long will my student have access to this course?

Since this course is self-paced, you, the parent, have control over when your student begins the course. You can start as soon as the course is available, or wait a few weeks or months. Beginning the course is as easy as pressing a button. Once you choose to begin the course for your student, they will have one year to access the course.

Once your student completes their current lesson, they’ll receive access to the next one within 1-2 hours. This allows you the flexibility to work ahead if needed to account for vacations or time off while still finishing the course in the typical timeframe.

Students will have a full calendar year to complete the course, so if they fall a week or two behind, they should still have plenty of time to complete all the lessons.

Does my child have to view the course videos on specific days?

No, students can watch the lessons anytime throughout the week. Once a lesson is unlocked (by completing the previous lessons), each video can be reviewed as many times as the student wants as long as they have access to the course.

Which level is right for my child (Level B or Level C)?

Physical Science Explored Level B is designed for the middle school years, while Physical Science Explored Level C is perfect for high school students. The upper-level course includes everything from Level B and builds on the concepts with weekly assignments including:

  • Additional video lessons
  • Instruction on writing high-school-level lab reports
  • Additional labs that reinforce concepts and provide lab report writing practice
  • In-depth projects and activities

Are there any math prerequisites?

While this course does not have a lot of math involved, as an integrated chemistry and physics course it does have some. Students should have a good understanding of basic math operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and fractions. Some pre-algebra skills would also be helpful.

How much time per week will this class take?

We recommend students plan to complete one lesson per week to finish the course in a typical school year. That usually takes about half an hour per day, five days per week for Level B. If your student is in Level C, you’ll need to allocate about 1 hour a day, five days per week.

Can I enroll more than one child in this course at the same time?

Each student receives their own online portal, quizzes, and grades, so each student should enroll separately. We do offer generous multi-student discounts for families enrolling more than one student in the class at the same time.

What is your discount for enrolling multiple students?

If you have multiple students (in the same immediate family) enrolling in the same upper-level course, we offer a 50% discount for the second student and a 75% discount for the third and fourth students.

If you have multiple students enrolling in the same level of the course, your discount will be automatically added at checkout. If you happen to have children enrolling in both the B and C levels, you’ll need to contact us via email at info@journeyhomeschoolacademy.com, so we can assist you.

Can we use a different textbook for this course?

We believe parents are best equipped to determine their student’s educational needs. As a homeschool course, you’re welcome to choose whatever textbook you’d prefer for your student to use or omit textbook reading altogether if you’d prefer. For most students, anytime they can use multiple modes of learning, it helps them retain information better.

After reviewing many, many textbooks we chose Novare Physical Science because we believe this textbook does an excellent job of reinforcing the concepts students are learning in the lectures. We provide recommended reading from them, however, if you choose another textbook you’ll need to be sure to assign students what you’d like them to read each week.

We have also created alternative reading schedules to accompany several other commonly used textbooks by homeschoolers. While we cannot vouch for every detail in these textbooks, the reading lists provided here generally overlap with what is covered in each of the lessons in the course.

In addition to our recommended textbooks, we currently have a reading list available for the following textbooks:

  • Physical Science, BJU Press (6th edition)
  • Exploring Creation with Physical Science, Apologia (3rd edition)
  • Science: Matter & Energy, Abeka (1st edition)
  • Physical Science, ACSI/Purposeful Design (1st edition)

Can my student earn high school credit for this course?

In most states, students need to accumulate at least 120 hours of instruction and coursework to receive a high school credit.

Physical Science Explored Level C for high school allows your child to accumulate these hours. They’ll need to complete all of the following to accumulate the necessary course hours:

  • complete all the course lectures
  • take all the quizzes and exams
  • complete all recommended readings
  • complete all lab and activity assignments part of the regular course
  • complete each of the additional weekly level C assignments

Please note: the Level B course for middle school ages does not include enough hours for most students to receive high school credit. If you are intending your student to earn high school credit, be sure to select the Physical Science Explored Level C program when you sign up.

Can I take this course if I live outside the United States?

You sure can! We’ve made sure to make the lessons applicable to those worldwide. We’re excited to welcome our friends in other countries to join us as we study physical science.

Do you offer options to use this in a co-op?

We plan to begin offering this course for co-ops beginning in 2025.

We offer co-op pricing for groups of 4 or more who have designated a single instructor/facilitator. Co-op courses are designed for groups that are meeting at least weekly.

Our co-op courses are set up differently than our family programs to accommodate groups. You can learn more about our co-op courses here.

Please note: because of the way our group programs are set up, we are not able to communicate with individual parents of students within co-ops.

What is your refund policy?

We offer a 100% money-back, happiness guarantee within 30 days of the course start date OR 6 months from purchase date (whichever is less). Simply email us and we’ll give you a full refund.

I wanted a solid science program, one where I didn’t have to teach my daughter myself…

but what most won me over was when my daughter referenced something in Scripture after her science lesson — it brought it all together and that was the best part. You can feel confident and assured your kids will learn, have fun, and be given a Biblical worldview when they’re signed up for this program!

A Few of the Things Your Student Will Learn

How atoms make up everything you see around you (hint: it’s atoms are like the LEGO of the universe!)

The 6,000-volt shock you experience practically every day

How to make a gummy bear explode

Why you see fireworks before you can hear them

How to build your own electric circuit

and so much more!

We have a Fabulous Fit Promise. We want this course to be a fabulous fit for your family. Based on our parent and student feedback, we think you will be.

However, we offer a 100% money-back, happiness guarantee within 30 days of the course start date OR 6 months from purchase date (whichever is less).

We were looking for a science curriculum with a Biblical worldview, without an enormous amount of textbook reading.

We had used an online curriculum the last 2 years, but it just didn’t fit my son’s learning style. My son’s learning style is visual-spatial so “hands-on” curricula works best for him. I love that I can rely on the video teaching. The fill in the blank notes have really helped him stay engaged during the lecture and shows he wasn’t just going through the motions of doing schoolwork. It’s a blessing to know he’s doing well in this subject with very little investment of my time.

Access Your Lessons on Any Device

I had zero concerns about this curriculum because it’s the third JHA course we’ve used.

I knew my kids would be stretched academically, and I could trust the content. I loved the fact that this course required my kids to take notes, complete reading assignments, and monitor their own progress—growing them up a little.

We used your elementary level courses, and loved them. I was hoping the middle school level class would be a good fit for us…

It totally was! All the parts of the class work really well together. I’ve watched the videos with my kids, and we’ve learned so much. This class has been great for my whole family!

I see so many people put their kids back in school when they get to high school, because they lack the confidence to teach courses like chemistry…

…thanks to you guys, that is no longer an excuse. The videos in this course are top notch and I like the layout of the workbook with the opportunity it provides to learn notetaking skills. This is a challenging course, designed well, and taught from a biblical worldview. Thank you for working so hard to put these amazing courses together!
