You’re invited to enter The Great Backyard Bug Challenge! Your goal is to discover more about one of the fascinating bugs in your backyard and become the teacher.

 Grand prize winners will win one of our full-school-year courses for this school year.

Age Brackets:

  • 7 years old and under — Any level A course from JHA
  • 8 -11 year olds — Any level A course from JHA
  • 12+ years old — Any level B or C course from JHA

Winners who have already enrolled in a JHA course for the upcoming school year will be refunded the cost of their student. 

How to Enter

Step 1: Choose an insect. Pick an insect you’d like to learn more about. It can be any insect.

Step 2: Research your insect. Use your local library or the internet to learn about your insect. Consider the following questions when you are doing your research.

  • What is your insect’s common and scientific name?
  • What does your insect look like?
  • What does it eat?
  • Where does it live?
  • Does it fly?
  • What is its life cycle like?
  • How long does it live?
  • How does it protect itself?
  • What are its predators?
  • What are some interesting or weird facts you can find out about your insect?

Step 3: Create a project teaching others about the insect. Consider the following ideas:

  • A written report
  • Some kind of creative writing
  • Artwork (painting, drawing, sculpting, etc.)
  • A poster
  • A powerpoint or keynote presentation
  • A video you make
  • Get creative and come up with another idea!

Step 4: Submit your project. Below is a form for you to submit the project.

  • Written reports or creative writing should be submitted as a .pdf, .pages, or .word file.
  • Artwork or posters should be photographed and photos should be uploaded as .jpeg, .jpg, or .png file.
  • Powerpoint or keynote files can be uploaded as they are.
  • Videos should be uploaded to a video sharing website like YouTube or Vimeo. Submit the link to the video.
