The Journey Homeschool Academy Virtual Science Fair is designed to inspire curiosity and build confidence in middle schoolers around the world. Whether you have access to local science fairs or not, this is an opportunity for your middle schooler to participate!
And the best part? It’s all done from home!
How The Virtual Science Fair Works:

1. PREPARE YOUR BOARD AND PRESENTATION
Students have the option to complete a physical presentation board or a digital board using Canva. They will also record a 30-second to 3-minute video showcasing their experiment and what they’ve learned.

2. SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT
All projects must be submitted by May 2nd. There is a $5 entry fee to help with the administration of the science fair (and to ensure we’re not bombarded with spam entries!).

3. CELEBRATE SCIENCE
All projects will be showcased so your students can learn from their fellow homeschoolers! Finalists and winners will be announced on May 19th.

Science fairs give students the opportunity to…

Explore and discover
Kids love asking “why” and “how.” A science fair gives them the chance to dig deeper into a topic that fascinates them, whether it’s how plants grow, why airplanes fly, or what makes a homemade battery work.

Learn by doing
Science isn’t just something to read about—it’s something to experience! By designing and testing their own experiment, students get hands-on with the scientific process and see how science applies to real life.

Practice explaining ideas
Scientists don’t just do experiments; they share their discoveries! Creating a project video helps students learn to organize their thoughts and explain their ideas clearly, an important skill for life.

Tackle challenges
Not every experiment goes as planned—and that’s a good thing! Learning to adjust, troubleshoot, and think critically when things don’t work teaches resilience and problem-solving skills.

Inspire and be inspired
Science is meant to be shared! Every project will be showcased so students can see what others have created, learn from their discoveries, and spark new ideas.

Take pride in their work
Whether or not they win a prize, completing a science fair project is an accomplishment to be proud of. Students will walk away with the confidence that they can tackle big questions and find answers.
What You Need to Know:
When is the science fair?
Submissions are due by May 2, 2025 at 11:59pm ET. Submissions will be shared the week of May 12th, and winners will be announced on May 19th.
Who can participate?
This year’s virtual science fair is open to homeschoolers around the world who are between the ages of 12 and 15 years old as of May 2, 2025. You don’t need to be a Journey Homeschool Academy student, and you’re welcome to participate in other science fairs as well. We hope to offer additional age categories in the future!
$5 entry fee
Putting on a science fair includes a lot of moving parts, including creating the materials, sorting submissions, working with judges, and curating prizes. To offset some of the costs of that process — and prevent our fair from being flooded with spam submissions— there is a nominal $5 fee for entry.
Submission requirements
All entrants should conduct a science experiment following the scientific method.
As with a traditional science fair, they should then create a presentation board that highlights their hypothesis as well as the materials and method used for their project, the results of their experiment, and their conclusion based on those results. This can be done with a physical presentation board or using the digital board we’ve put together in Canva.
Alongside their presentation board, students should record a short (30 second to 3 minutes) video answering the following questions:
- Why did you choose this topic? Share what inspired you and why you found it interesting.
- What did you learn from this project?
Judging criteria
Projects will be evaluated on a number of criteria. Our team will do an initial review of all projects based on uniqueness, thoroughness, creativity, and adherence to the science method. Judges will then use the rubric found here to rate each of our finalists and determine the overall winners.
Prizes
- 1st place: $100 gift card from Home Science Tools toward any kit or product
- 2nd place: Geology Kit (choose Deluxe Mineral Kit, Deluxe Fossil Kit, or the Minecraft-inspired MyCraft kit) plus a Geology Test Kit from Cornerstone Educational Supply
- 3rd place: MEL Science kit (choose between STEM, physics, or chemistry)
